Originally built for the handling of bulk freight such as coal, sand and gravel and pumice and other freight, the Port of Stuttgart has had to adapt to changes in commerce and transportation. It is now a modern commercial and industrial port offering a wide range of services and having a transport infrastructure unavailable in Stuttgart prior to its construction.

Raw materials can now be shipped in by barge for processing in the immediate area. High-quality manufactured goods can be taken out of the city by water and by rail.
